How Babies Nurse

Our swallows are long and slow. So are theirs.

Get a glass of water. "Chatter" your jaw on the rim, then start swallowing. You can "chatter" as fast as you want, but once you start swallowing, you can’t go faster than about one per second.  Babies may "chatter" on your breast as they get everything arranged.  When your milk releases, the real swallowing starts.

Babies "rest their fork" sometimes

Try eating a big meal without pausing. Not fun.  And babies are still getting sucking, swallowing, and breathing organized. No wonder they take frequent pauses. But you’ll notice they don’t let go!

Is my baby hungry? Or is it something else?

Why analyze it?  Babies nurse because they need closeness, safety, reassurance, conversation, entertainment, help sleeping, calories, a drink, and all sorts of other reasons that only they know.  Nursing may not always be the question, but most of the time it's the answer.
